What to know when you climb Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan with it’s peak at an incredible 3776 meters. Mount Fuji is the main focal point of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu national park and is available to be climbed by adventurous travelers. The Fuji Mountain is located on the main Japan island Honshu, just west of Tokyo and can be seen from there on a clear day.
If you’re feeling up for the challenge to take on Mount Fuji mark your calender for a date between July and August as the climbing season only lasts for two months! Even during these summer months temperatures can reach below freezing at night. Remember on your climb that there are real challenges to be faced, such as cold temperatures and thin air. The hike to the top can be taxing as well, make sure to compe prepared.
There are resting huts and some food purchasing outlets along the way, but it is best to bring your own food for the hike if you can as the selection is low and price of food is high due to the hard to reach location.
The ascent up the beautiful Mt. Fuji usually takes 4 to 8 hours at walking speed, and the descent another 2 to 4 hours. The most common way to hike Fuji is an overnight climb, resting at night and reaching the summit at dawn. To get to Mt. Fuji the easiest option is to take the direct bus line known as Keio express from Shinjuku in Tokyo. This bus ride will take about 2 hours and cost a tourist 2600 Yen.
From the top of Mount Fuji you’ll be able to see the ‘Fuji Five Lakes’ looking out towards Tokyo, Fuji is often wreathed in clouds but occassionally you will have a great view from the peak.
