Planing a vacation to Japan on a tight budget
April 24, 2009
Vacations are an integral part of our family lives. It not only refreshes us out of our monotonous worklife but also gives us an opportunity to spend some quality time with our family.
Vacations also help our kids get a firsthand experience of the things they have just heard of or read in books. It can help them to learn and appreciate the differences in culture and day to day life of people from different origins. On one hand it can help you get refreshed, while on the other it can be a fun learning experience for your kids. Nowhere is this more true than in Japan.
We would all love to have a well-charted-out plan to save for some time and then go for a vacation but given the uncertainty of our lifestyles and unforeseen expenses it is not always possible to do so. As a result we develop the tendency to defer our plans or abandon them completely. This might at times have a damaging impact on the moral of our family.
While the grownup members can appreciate the credit crunch, the kids, however, are too young to understand the economy. The other setback can be that if you postpone your plans for long you might be inviting fatigue to pile up, which could result in your professional under-performance.
Is there a way we can manage? Definitely there is. Below are the two strategies you can use if you are hoping to holiday in Japan.
You can form a group of like minded families from your neighborhood and plan your vacations together. The benefit you get from this arrangement is that you can always go for bulk-booking, which can get you a saving of 30-40% if done right – a hefty saving if you’re heading to Japan.
This can bring an otherwise unaffordable Japan trip within your budget. The drawback with this approach is that all the members of the trip should have a good coordination. You might have to give up on your liberty to spend more time on places you love more.
The other way is to find a group of likeminded Japan-loving families and start a chit-fund. A chit fund is when each family contributes a fixed amount of money each month to the common pool. Depending upon the number of families you can have a selection of a family at regular intervals based on a lottery system.
The selected family is given all the money in the kitty up until that point. The family goes and enjoys their holiday and the chit fund continues. In the next lottery the name of the family which has already won is removed, although they continue to contribute to the funds.
This process continues until all the families get a share of the Japan vacation. The advantage of this method is that you continue to enjoy your liberty to plan your trip the way you like and at the same time you don’t have to defer your trip until you have all the funds available. Another advantage is that you can leverage your position beyond your savings without the fear of any interest being charged for your borrowing.
The drawback is that you will have to plan your vacation at the time of winning the lottery. This can be taken care if you have a group that is really understanding and cooperating.
These are just a few tips to help you get to Japan.
An African Safari
April 20, 2009
Have you ever visited the zoo and wished that you could see all of those beautiful animals living, eating, and running free in their own environment? Have you ever wished that you could get as up close and personal as safely possible with these wild animals that are dwelling behind locked cages?
For those of you whose idea of the perfect vacation would be spent riding along bumpy roads, driving through bushes, or being covered by sand in search of wild animals, an African safari would be the destination for you.
For example, the great migration from Serengeti and Masai Mara to witness the wildebeest migration from Northern Tanzania to southern Kenya might be something you would be interested in experiencing.
Your adventure begins when you arrive in Kilimanjaro. You are picked up and transported to the Mountain Village, your lodging for the night. You will be able to relax from your long flight before actually starting your safari.
Your safari begins the following day in Lake Manyara where you will have the opportunity to view huge flocks of pink flamingoes, giraffes, baboons, hippos, and elephants. Your lodging at this stop will be the Ngorongoro Serena/Ngorongoro Sopa where your welcome reception and dinner will be held.
Your next stop will be at the Olduvai Gorge, where archaeologists Louis and Mary Leakey discovered the fossilized remains of the earliest known man, an estimated 1.8 million years old. Serengeti Serena/Ngorongo Sopa will be your lodging for the night. You will then spend two days in Serengeti, which is probably the most famous wildlife sanctuary in the world. Here you will see hundreds of thousands of wildebeests migrating. Your lodging during this stop will be the Serengeti Serena/Ngorongo Sopa.
Then, you will spend four days in Masai Mara following the herds of wildebeests, watching them interact with each other in their natural habitats. You will see different species and their habitats along the way. During this four day stay you will also have the opportunity to climb aboard a hot air balloon and view these magnificent beasts from the air. Mara Intrepids Camp will be your lodging during this time.
The last leg of your journey will include a hearty breakfast before you drive across the savannah for one last excursion. You will stop for a picnic lunch before joining your safari guides for your farewell dinner, and then begin your journey back home.
Taking a Road Trip Across the United States
April 16, 2009
For people who are not fond of traveling, a road trip vacation might not be something they would want to do. For those who really enjoy traveling, a road trip vacation would be a perfect adventure. If you are a really spontaneous person, you might just decide to get in the car and start driving, and see where you end up. For the less spontaneous people, a travel plan might be needed.
The first thing you need to do is get a road map of the United States and plan out where you want to go, if you just want to drive across the state you live in or if you want to drive through a couple of different states. Or, maybe you are interested in driving through a certain region.
You might also want to decide some of the different places you would like to visit in each town you drive through. Maybe you have seen the show Diners, Drive-In’s, and Dives, where the host travels to different restaurants sampling some of their dishes. Maybe that is something that would interest you, stopping at a small town café or restaurant in each town you drive through.
Once you have decided on those two things, you need to decide the date and time you plan on leaving and the date you plan on returning home. Maybe you could plan out how long it will take you to get to each place and then be able to estimate how long you will be gone.
With all of those decisions made, you are finally ready to leave on your road trip. Make sure you have your clothes and toiletries packed, as well as a camera and maybe a road trip journal so you can write down interesting things about each town you stop in. Be sure to have enough traveler’s checks, credit cards, or cash for your trip. You don’t want to end up stranded with not enough money to get back home.
If you plan on spending the nights of your road trip in a hotel, you might want to call the hotels along your route to see if reservations are needed. If you don’t call ahead of time you might end up finding that there are no rooms available, and then you would have to drive through the night until you did find a vacancy.
With all of your plans arranged, suitcases packed, and money in wallet, you are now ready to load the car and leave. Have fun and enjoy the trip!
